UPS with Lithium Battery & DC distribution

Lithium-based UPS system for my comms equipment!

UPS with Lithium Battery & DC distribution

Considered buying a new UPS system after several battery and inverter failures over the past 10 years.

The majority of battery problems I've had probably relate to temperatures over 25degC as I've always had equipment in the top of cupboards etc.

I decided that $1000 would get me a decent quality rack mounted APC or similar which I could try to swap the batteries out for lithium as they may run better over 25degC.

Then - once I had a look around - I found I could buy a Victron Multiplus Inverter/Charger that would do the job, has a UPS mode, and is completely customisable with respect to battery types etc.

The basic setup I went with for $1000 is a 50AH LiFePO4 with a Victron Multiplus 800VA Inverter-Charger.

Subsequent to the above - I decided it would be better if I had DC power distributed to the DC devices to avoid the conversion of running through the inverter.

So - to get regulated 12VDC - I added a Victron Orion Tr 9A DC-DC converter with a marine circuit breaker panel to give circuit protection and a switch to each load for easy resets of devices (e.g. NBN/router).

Then why not use the VE-Direct interface on the Multiplus to give remote monitoring and status via Victron's VRM Portal.

Job done! OK maybe needs a tidy up - pretty messy install!
